Like most international airports, Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) operates a strict no-smoking policy indoors. This guide explains exactly where you can and cannot smoke or vape, so a long layover does not catch you out.

Smoking is permitted only in the designated outdoor smoking areas, which are outside the terminal building — around the entrances and along the departures/arrivals kerb, landside. These spots are signposted; smoking outside them, or anywhere indoors, can bring a fine.
This is the key point most travellers miss: once you pass through security into the airside departures area, there is no outdoor access and no smoking lounge. If you have a long wait or a connection ahead, smoke before you go through security — after that, you are inside until you board. On a long layover you would otherwise have to exit through passport control and re-clear security to reach an outdoor area, which is rarely practical.
| Where | Smoking / vaping |
|---|---|
| Inside the terminal (land- or airside) | Not allowed |
| Designated outdoor areas (landside, by entrances) | Allowed |
| Airside, after security | No outdoor access — not possible |
