Official taxis at Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) wait just outside the arrivals hall. They are the fastest door-to-door way into the city — about 25 km (a 30–40 minute drive) to central Baku — as well as to Sumqayit and the Absheron sights. No booking is needed, as cars are almost always waiting, day or night.
Fares and the apps

Airport taxis usually charge a set price into the city; always confirm the fare before you set off. Most locals, however, order a ride through Bolt or Uber, which both operate in Baku, show the price up front, are cashless and usually work out cheaper than an airport-desk taxi. The currency is the manat (₼); some drivers take cards, but carry cash to be safe. See our full guide to Bolt & Uber at the airport.
Approximate drive times
| Destination | Drive time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Central Baku | ~35 min | Old City, Boulevard, Flame Towers |
| Sumqayit | ~40 min | Agree the fare first |
| Gobustan | ~1 h | Fixed price for the round trip |
| Gabala | ~3 h 30 min | Best by transfer or car |
Payment and tipping
The currency is the manat (₼). Cards are often accepted, but it is wise to carry some cash, as not every taxi takes a card. Tipping is not obligatory — rounding up the fare is appreciated. Ordering through an app avoids any dispute over the price.
Practical tips
- Use the official taxi rank outside arrivals, or order a Bolt / Uber ride, and decline anyone touting inside the terminal.
- Confirm the total, and whether it is per car or per person, before you leave.
- Have your hotel address written down or set in the app — Azerbaijani and Russian are spoken more than English.
- Prefer a driver waiting on arrival at a price fixed in advance? Consider a private transfer instead.
Taxi fares and app prices vary with demand and time of day, so treat these as a guide and confirm on the day.
