If you are used to opening a ride-hailing app when you land, good news: Baku has two. Bolt and Uber both operate here, so you are not stuck with a desk taxi. Both work at Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) and are the cheapest convenient way into the city, about 25 km (a 35-minute drive) away. Here is how they work and when a taxi still makes sense.
The two apps: Bolt and Uber
Bolt is the everyday favourite in Baku — plenty of cars, low fares and quick pickups. Uber also operates in the city and works the same familiar way. Both let you set your destination, see the price before you book, and match with a nearby driver whose car and plate show in the app. It is worth having both installed before you fly, so if one is quiet at your arrival hour, the other may have a car closer.
- Set them up before you travel, adding a card if you want to pay cashless; both also accept cash in most cases.
- You will need mobile data — pick up a local SIM or eSIM in the terminal, or use the airport Wi-Fi to order before you step outside.
- Azerbaijani and Russian dominate; the app removes any language barrier over the destination and fare.
How airport pickup works
The process is the same as anywhere, with one airport quirk — the pickup point:
- Order once you have your bags and are near the exit, not while you are still at the belt.
- Walk to the designated ride-hailing area outside the arrivals hall — the app pin shows the exact spot, which may be a short walk from the door rather than right at the kerb.
- Confirm the car and plate in the app before you get in, and check the destination is set.
Ride-hailing vs the official taxi
Baku’s official airport and city taxis are the distinctive purple "London-style" cabs run by Baku Taxi. They are metered and reliable, and always waiting at the rank — but for the airport run an app usually costs less and removes any doubt over the fare.

Tips for a smooth ride
- Have a SIM or data ready — the apps need it. Buy a local SIM in the arrivals hall if you don’t have roaming.
- Deep-night arrivals: Baku gets a wave of flights in the small hours; driver numbers thin then, so keep the taxi rank or a pre-booked transfer as a backup.
- Carry some manat in case you pay cash or switch to a taxi.
- Save your hotel as the destination in advance to avoid any address confusion.
